Creating your Surrealist Image

Today you will begin designing your composition.

The design must use your own photography except for objects that you do not have access to.

Remember Erik Johanssens 3 rules for creating an image

  1. Photos that are combined must have the same perspective
  2. Photos combined must have the same type of light
  3. Photos must be seamlessly combined
Begin by creating 3-5 Thumbnail Sketches. A thumbnail sketch is a small, quick drawing that you use for planning your final design.

You will then gather, or take pictures of the images you will need for your composition.

Surrealist Photo Illustration

What is Surrealism? Magical Realism?

For our purposes Surreal or magical realism describes an image where the elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment. Although it is most commonly used as a literary genre, magic realism also applies to film and the visual arts.

Here is a link to a TED talk by Erik Johansson. Erik creates realistic photos of impossible situations.

Today we will begin creating a surreal image using photoshop.

Using the provided images plus at least one of your own, (either from the web or a photos you have taken), create a magical realist composition using exaggerated scale. You may select, crop, and place the elements in the composition in any way that presents them in an incongruous, unusual or “super normal” manner.

Upload each file to a post in blogger.

For each document, answer the following:

1. What is the definition of the word? You should look this up online.

2. What are three things that you did to express the meaning of the word? Consider spacing, size, rotation, placement, repetition, omission of letters, or any other specific ideas that you used.

For the next questions answer on a scale of: Exceeds(5) Good (4) Average(3) Needs work(2) Poor (1)

1. Objectives - How well does your work solve the requirements outlined in the assignment?

2. Production - Did you take your time or rush? Do you have good craftsmanship or is it sloppy? Did you stay on task?

3. Creativity - How original, innovative, and daring is your work? Did you explore new ideas or just stick to the basic requirements? Is it unique from everyone else’s?
