Post Your Illustrator Work and Self Assessment

Post all of the work you've done in Illustrator, including:
  • The first practice traced objects
  • Your original drawing - the one you scanned
  • The Illustrator version of your drawing
  • Artist statement, in paragraph format, answering the following:
  1. Describe your drawing. What does it mean to you?
  2. What tools in Illustrator did you use to create the image? I want you to name, define the function, and how you used each tool.
  3. What problems did you encounter when crerating the Image? How did you resolve them?
  • Do the Self Assessment. This time, instead of answering using a number scle, use your own words to dewcribe how well you fulfilled the following:
  1. Objectives - How well does your work solve the requirements outlined in the assignment? 
  2. Production - Did you take your time or rush? Do you have good craftsmanship or is it sloppy? Did you stay on task? 
  3. Creativity - How original, innovative, and daring is your work? Did you explore new ideas or just stick to the basic requirements? Is it unique from everyone else’s? 
  4. Growth - How does this work compare to previous work? Does it show improvement in your skills, thought, and planning? Are you brainstorming and considering many ideas before diving in?
  5. Composition and Design -  How well did you use your elements and principles in your work to create a well balanced composition?

Digitize an original drawing in Adobe Illustrator

Your assignment for the next two class periods will be to Digitize an original drawing in Adobe Illustrator.

 Using an orginal drawing, scan and place it in a tracing layer in Illustrator.

Using the Selection, Direct Selection, Pen tool and Layers, Trace your drawing. Make sure you use Bezier curves and cotrol handles

Use at least two colors.

Your goal will be to improve your skills with Illustrator, particularly the Pen tool.

Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

Today we'll begin working with adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is a Vector Based graphics program. So far we have worked only with a Bitmap based graphics program, Photoshop.

Here is an example of the same image in both formats. The Vector graphic is on top, the Bitmap graphic is on bottom. Notice that as the Vector graphic is enlarged the edges stay smooth, whereas the bitmap graphic becomes pixelated.




Today we will learn about the some of the basic tools in Illustrator and do a brief exercise using these tools.

Post your Project

Please post your completed Surreal Image, along with the following:
  • Thumbnail Sketches
  • Original photos used in your project
  • Artist statement, in paragraph format, answering the following:

  1. The title of your picture.
  2. Description of the image and why it fulfills the definition of Surreal, or Magic realism.
  3. What tools in Photoshop did you use to create the image, such as the Polygonal lasso to make selections, or the layers Pallette.
  4. What problems did you encounter when crerating the Image? How did you resolve them?

  • Do the Self Assessment. Answer on a scale of: Exceeds(5) Good (4) Average(3) Needs work(2) Poor (1)
